The Hiring Platform That Starts With Empathy, Not Filters

Not every design brief starts with a business problem. Sometimes it starts with a human one.

HeiPetter is a mission-driven platform focused on reducing “outsiderness” helping individuals reintegrate into the workforce by combining entrepreneurial experience and technology to make employment genuinely accessible.

The brief wasn’t to build another job board. It was to design a platform for people left behind by conventional hiring systems while being credible and trustworthy enough for employers to use seriously.

Two audiences. One platform. A mission that couldn’t afford a poor user experience.

The Core Design Challenge

Job seekers needed a platform that felt human and approachable not bureaucratic or intimidating. Many would be first-time digital platform users with low confidence in formal processes.

Employers needed the opposite signal: structure, credibility, and efficient candidate discovery.

Designing for both without compromising either is exactly where user-centred interaction design determines whether a platform succeeds or gets abandoned.

Discovery: Understanding Real Users First

Before a wireframe was drawn, the team mapped the emotional journey of a job seeker who has been out of work — the anxiety, the friction points, the moments where most platforms lose people entirely.

Kilowott’s UX process begins with understanding goals and the needs of the target audience creating wireframes and prototypes that reflect the most user-friendly design, iterating based on feedback and testing, focusing on usability, accessibility, and visual clarity.

Key questions that shaped the research: Where do job seekers drop off and why? What builds employer trust on a new platform? What information is essential, and what creates unnecessary friction?

Architecture and Flow: Designed Around Thinking, Not Databases

The job seeker flow was structured to reduce decision fatigue onboarding broken into progressive steps that built a sense of accomplishment rather than overwhelm.

The employer side prioritised efficient search, clear candidate profiles, and trust signals from the first session.

For a smooth workflow of information, the platform’s architecture must be structured with key components clearly labelled with a roadmap that navigates synchronously with business goals, giving the product a holistic approach to UX.

Key Design Decisions That Shaped the Platform

Several choices emerged from prototyping that proved critical:

Plain language throughout. Every label and instruction was written for users without formal education or Norwegian as a first language. No jargon. Consistently warm tone.

Progressive profile building. Users could engage immediately and build profiles over time, eliminating abandonment at the highest-risk point in the journey.

Mobile-first execution. Testing revealed the majority of target job seekers accessed the platform almost exclusively on mobile. Desktop was secondary.

Dual visual language. Clean and professional for employers. Warm and human for job seekers. One coherent brand system serving two very different emotional needs.

Testing and Refinement

Once UI/UX is developed, it is tested under extreme usability conditions, sampled among a specific user community where acceptance is determined across resolution, compatibility, navigation, and responsiveness, fixing errors before deployment.

Testing surfaced meaningful refinements: the job search filter was simplified after users skipped complex options entirely; the employer candidate review flow was reorganised after testers lost context switching between profiles.

Small changes. Significant impact on completion rates and platform trust.

The Outcome

HeiPetter is a mission-driven platform that reduces outsiderness by connecting talent and employers in an accessible way to create real social impact. Kilowott

The platform gives job seekers a dignified entry point into the labour market. It gives employers a structured, credible hiring tool. And it proves what purposeful design can accomplish when it starts from human need rather than technical convenience.
