Why Did ChatGPT Stop Citing Reddit? The Risk of Borrowed AI Visibility

For much of the past two years, one piece of advice kept coming up in conversations about AI search: if you want ChatGPT to mention your brand, get talked about on Reddit. It made sense. Reddit was one of the sources ChatGPT cited most, and as recently as April it was the single most-cited domain in ChatGPT Search, accounting for 4.14% of all citations, according to Forbes.

The appeal was easy to understand. Reddit is full of real people asking real questions, comparing products and sharing honest opinions, which is exactly the kind of material AI tools lean on when someone asks for a recommendation. For many brands, a single well-regarded thread could seem more influential than a dozen polished pages on their own website.

That popularity attracted some less genuine tactics too. Some SEOs have described businesses planting information about themselves in Reddit threads in the hope that AI tools would pick it up and repeat it.

Then, in the middle of August, the ground shifted. Within a few days, Reddit’s presence in ChatGPT’s answers fell dramatically, and anyone relying on it for AI visibility was suddenly on much less certain footing. The timing added to the attention: the drop came the same week Reddit joined the S&P 500, as Forbes noted, turning what might have been a niche SEO story into wider business news.

What the Data Shows

According to AI visibility platform Promptwatch, Reddit held a steady 3.83% average share of ChatGPT Search citations from 18 July to 7 August 2026. It fell below 1% on 14 August, and averaged just 0.52% from 14 to 17 August, an 86.4% drop, as reported by Search Engine Land.

The decline came in two steps. On 8 August, the same day Promptwatch recorded a change in how ChatGPT Search runs its background searches, Reddit’s share slipped from the high 3% range into the mid-2% range, before the much sharper fall six days later.

The change was specific to ChatGPT. Promptwatch found no comparable one-day drop in Google’s AI products, where Reddit’s share of AI Overview citations declined only gradually, from about 2.5% in early July to around 2.1% in August.

It’s worth keeping the numbers in perspective. According to Semrush, Promptwatch describes the findings as provisional and says it can’t rule out an issue with its own data collection. OpenAI has said it doesn’t set a fixed level of visibility for individual sites, and that ChatGPT still cites Reddit.

Three Theories About What Happened

Nobody outside OpenAI knows for certain why Reddit’s citations fell. Three explanations have been widely discussed.

ChatGPT changed how it searches. On 8 August, Promptwatch observed ChatGPT using the “site:” search operator at scale, with queries targeted at specific websites jumping from 0.37% to 16.8% of all background searches in a single day. If ChatGPT is now going directly to particular websites rather than casting a wide net, sources like Reddit may simply be asked less often. In its follow-up analysis, Promptwatch concluded that this looks like a change in how ChatGPT chooses which sites to query, rather than a Reddit-specific penalty. Not everyone agrees, though: Search Engine Journal argued that this explanation doesn’t fully match the numbers.

Platforms are pushing back on manipulation. Some SEOs, as summarised by ROI Revolution, suspect OpenAI and Google are trying to get ahead of growing abuse on Reddit, where people plant quotable information about their businesses in threads to influence AI citations. This remains speculation rather than a confirmed cause.

Something changed on Reddit’s side. One blog, explainx.ai, has claimed Reddit itself restricted crawler access, but this hasn’t been confirmed by Reddit or OpenAI.

The honest answer is that it may be a combination, or something else entirely. But for businesses, the cause matters less than the lesson.

“Visibility you borrow from another platform can be taken back without warning.”

The Real Lesson: Don’t Build on Someone Else’s Ground

This isn’t the first time it has happened. A similar collapse was reported in September 2025, later attributed by some analysts to Google removing a search parameter that third-party data providers relied on. Semrush’s own study of more than 230,000 prompts tracked that earlier drop, when ChatGPT’s Reddit citations fell from about 60% of responses in early August 2025 to roughly 10% by mid-September. As Forbes put it, visibility inside AI answers sits on infrastructure that platforms can rewire overnight, without notice.

Speaking to Axios, Burson’s Steve Rubel made the same point, warning brands not to pin their hopes on a single “mythical unicorn” and describing AI visibility as a long game played across many channels, where some rise and some fall.

For anyone who planted comments to influence AI answers, there’s an added risk. The tactic can get accounts banned by subreddit moderators, and it’s an even weaker bet now that citations are less likely.

There’s a reputational cost to consider as well. Reddit communities are quick to spot and call out disguised promotion, and a brand caught posting fake recommendations can find that thread becoming the most visible thing people read about it. What was meant to build trust can end up doing the opposite.

The pattern is familiar from earlier eras of search. Tactics like keyword stuffing and paid link schemes worked for a while, until search engines caught up and the businesses relying on them lost far more than they’d gained. AI search looks set to follow the same path, which is why the approaches that last tend to be the ones that don’t depend on exploiting a gap.

What Still Works for AI Visibility

Make your own website easy for AI to find and read. If ChatGPT is increasingly searching specific sites directly, your own site becomes more important, not less. As Promptwatch framed it, the priority shifts from getting cited on Reddit to making sure your own site is crawlable enough to be asked directly. That means fast pages, clear structure and nothing blocking legitimate AI crawlers.

Answer real questions clearly. Pages that explain pricing, compare options, address common concerns and share genuine expertise give AI tools something useful to cite. Vague marketing copy doesn’t.

Earn mentions rather than manufacturing them. Coverage in trusted publications, genuine customer reviews, industry directories and partnerships create a spread of signals that doesn’t depend on any one platform.

Track AI visibility across several platforms. The August drop affected ChatGPT far more than Google’s AI products. Checking how your brand appears across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and others gives a truer picture than watching just one.

Reddit Still Matters, Just Differently

None of this means marketers should abandon Reddit. As Semrush notes, it remains one of the few places marketers get direct, unfiltered access to how customers talk about products and competitors. Its value for research and sentiment tracking hasn’t changed; only its current visibility in ChatGPT’s answers has.

Reddit may also still be playing a role behind the scenes. Semrush raises the possibility that ChatGPT now uses Reddit earlier in its process, to help identify brands or topics before running more focused searches, rather than dropping it altogether. And in Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Reddit’s citations have declined only gradually, so it remains a visible source there.

Used well, Reddit is a place to listen, learn what customers genuinely care about and join conversations honestly. Those insights can then shape the content on your own website, which is where lasting visibility is built.

Questions People Are Asking

Did ChatGPT stop citing Reddit completely? No. Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations fell sharply, but OpenAI says ChatGPT still cites Reddit, and the tracking data showing the drop is described as provisional.

Why did Reddit’s ChatGPT citations drop? The cause hasn’t been confirmed. Leading theories include a change in how ChatGPT runs its searches, efforts to reduce manipulation of AI citations, and possible changes on Reddit’s side.

Is Reddit still useful for marketing? Yes. It remains valuable for understanding how customers talk about products, competitors and problems, even if it’s currently less visible in ChatGPT’s answers.

How can my brand get cited by ChatGPT? Focus on a crawlable, well-structured website with clear, genuinely useful content, supported by authentic mentions across trusted sources rather than a single platform.

Does Google AI Overviews still cite Reddit? Yes. According to Promptwatch, Reddit averaged 2.37% of AI Overview citations in the first seven days of its tracking period and 2.10% in the final seven, a gradual decline rather than the sudden drop seen in ChatGPT.

What is GEO, or generative engine optimisation? GEO is the practice of getting your brand cited inside AI-generated answers rather than simply ranked on a search results page. As the Reddit episode shows, it’s a fast-moving area, so strategies built on genuine content and a strong website tend to hold up better than tactics aimed at one platform.

The Slow Way Is Still the Fast Way

It’s tempting, every time something like this happens, to go looking for the next Reddit. The next platform AI tools seem to love, the next trick that gets a brand mentioned without much effort. There will always be one, and for a while it might even work.

But if the past few years of search have taught us anything, it’s that the shortcuts are the first things to go. The brands still standing after every update are usually the ones that never relied on a loophole in the first place. They built a website that makes sense, wrote things people actually wanted to read, and earned their reputation one genuine conversation at a time.

That’s not the most exciting advice. It won’t make a great headline on its own. But it has a quiet advantage: when the next change comes, and it will, there’s nothing to lose.

If you’d like to see how your brand currently shows up in AI search, we’d be glad to help.
